Last 2020, the Accessing GDM Care Project of the Institute for Reproductive Health Philippines in partnership with the World Diabetes Foundation succeeded and concluded as the first project on Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) in the Philippines in terms of service delivery method. The project started on July 1, 2017 and culminated on August 30, 2020. Currently, the Institute for Reproductive Health Philippines aims to continue and build on the accomplishments of the pioneer project. With this, the 2nd GDM project (2022- 2025) is commencing with a more comprehensive approach towards creating more sustainable and long-term results.

As we continue to #BeatGDM for a #HealthyPilipinas, let us first look back at the significant milestones and accomplishments of the first GDM project.

The GDM Project

The main objective of the “Accessing GDM Care” project launched by the Institute for       Reproductive Health Philippines and the World Diabetes Foundation was to lay down   guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of GDM in public health centers and hospitals.     The Gulod Health Center and Novaliches District Hospital in Quezon City and the   Manggahan Super Health Center and Pasig City General Hospital in Pasig City were   partners in this project. A feasible clinical pathway was established involving referrals to   the district hospital for laboratory, nutritional therapy, and high-risk pregnancy care.

This year as part of the Institute for Reproductive Health Philippines’ goal to mainstream health innovations into development programs in both public and private sectors the “Addressing Pregnancy Hyperglycemia by Nutrition Education and Services” or the 2nd GDM project will be launched. The project aims to build on the achievements of the pioneer project but also lay the foundation of more extensive, sustainable, and lasting results in terms of battling GDM.

The overall goal is to contribute to the prevention of hyperglycemia in pregnancy (HIP) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) cases in Dasmariñas City, Cavite, and District 5, Quezon City, National Capital Region among child-bearing aged women by (1) increasing awareness of HIP and GDM, and its burden to families, (2) enhancing assessment and referral protocols, and (3) improving access to pre and post-natal care aligned with GDM guidelines promoted by the Philippine College of Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism (PCEDM), Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS), and the Nutritionist-Dietitians' Association of the Philippines (NDAP).
